Śubhapantuvarāḷi

शुभपन्तुवराळि

With śuddha rishabha and dhaivata, sādhāraṇa gāndhāra and prati madhyama, Śubhapantuvarāḷi holds more tension than almost any other mela. It is the Carnatic counterpart of Hindustani Toḍī and is reserved for compositions of appeal and grief.

Points of practice

Check R1 and D1 daily

Both drift sharp under speed; test them against the drone every session.

M2 is the pivot

Most phrases turn on prati madhyama — make it firm, never passing.

Compare with Toḍī

The Hindustani rāga shares the scale but oscillates G and D; the difference is instructive.
