Recommended Listening

A listening path rather than a playlist. Work down a section slowly: one rāga or one movement at a sitting, the same recording several times, before moving on.

Hindustani vocal, by hour

Match the recording to the time of day it belongs to and the associations of the rāga will teach themselves.

RāgaHourListen forWhere to look
BhairavDawnThe weight of a flat Re approached from above, and how little the voice hurries.Dhrupad and slow khyāl recordings; ālāp of ten minutes or more.
Āhīr BhairavEarly morningA bright Ga against a soft Dha — the rāga sits between austerity and warmth.Vocal khyāl and bansuri recitals.
Śuddha SāraṅgLate morningBoth forms of Ma in one phrase, and the omission of Ga and Ni.Concert recordings of the Sāraṅg family.
DeshkarMiddayA pentatonic rāga leaning on Dha; compare it directly with Bhūp.Paired recordings of Deshkar and Bhūp.
YamanEarly eveningThe sharpened Ma as a resting place, and the long glide from Ni to Ga.Slow khyāl and sitar ālāp.
Darbārī KānaḍāNightThe wide oscillation on the flat Ga, held so slowly it is almost a separate note.Vilambit khyāl in a large cycle; sarod recitals.
MalkaunsDeep nightFive notes and no Pa; how long a phrase can dwell on Ma.Dhrupad and instrumental ālāp.

Carnatic

Begin with kṛtis of the Trinity — Tyāgarāja, Muttusvāmi Dīkṣitar and Śyāmā Śāstri — and hear the same kṛti sung by two performers.

MelakartāRāgaListen forWhere to look
29ŚaṅkarābharaṇamFull gamaka on a familiar-sounding major scale.Kṛtis of Tyāgarāja; ālāpana before the kṛti.
22KharaharapriyāHow the flat third and sixth are shaken rather than merely sounded.Long-form concert kṛtis with nirāval and svara-kalpana.
65MēcakalyāṇiThe sharpened fourth as the rāga’s centre of gravity.Varṇam and kṛti recordings.
15MāyāmāḷavagauḷaThe scale taught first to beginners, treated as a full rāga by a mature artist.Basic lessons, then a concert ālāpana for contrast.
8HanumatōḍiWeight on the flat second, and how tempo changes its character.Kṛtis in slow and medium speed.

Global classical

Chosen for how clearly the argument of a piece can be heard, not for difficulty.
