Toḍī

तोड़ी

Plaintive and deeply expressive — the great morning rāga of longing.

Toḍī carries three komal swaras and tīvra Ma, a combination found nowhere else. Its emotional range is wide, and it is considered among the most demanding rāgas to hold in tune.

How the Rāga Moves

Komal Ga and komal Dha carry a delicate oscillation; tīvra Ma is the axis between them. Pa is used sparingly and often skipped, which gives the rāga its characteristic wide, aching intervals.

X = sam · 0 = khālī · 2, 3, 4 = tālī · one cell = one mātrā · – = sustain.

One of the best-known Toḍī compositions. Practise the sthāyī against a tanpura tuned to Pa and check komal Ga carefully — it drifts sharp under speed.

Practice Notes

Points of Practice

Intonation first
Komal r and g are placed low; check them against the drone every session.
Use Pa sparingly
Overusing Pa turns the rāga toward Multānī in colour.
Tīvra Ma is the axis
Most phrases pivot on M′; make it firm, not passing.
