Bhairav

भैरव

Ascetic, still and luminous — the rāga of first light.

One of the oldest named rāgas and the head of its own thāṭ. Komal Re and komal Dha are given a slow āndolan; the rest of the scale is śuddha, which gives Bhairav its clear, austere daylight.

Cómo se mueve el rāga

Both komal notes are oscillated, never struck straight. Ga and Pa are the pillars from which the oscillations hang. The rāga is developed slowly in the middle octave before opening into the tār saptak.

A dawn composition of waking. Sing the mukhḍā with the oscillated komal Dha intact even at drut laya — dropping it is the most common error.

Notas de estudio

Puntos de estudio

Oscillate r and d
Steady komal notes belong to Kalingḍā, not Bhairav.
Rest on Ga and Pa
These two anchor every phrase; the oscillations resolve into them.
Slow ālāp
Bhairav is a rāga of daybreak — resist the urge to hurry into taans.
