Rāga Profile · Aparāhṇa · Afternoon
Madhyamād Sārang
मध्यमाद सारंग
Cool and steady — an afternoon rāga of few notes and long lines.
Also called Madhyamādi Sārang, this five-note rāga uses only S R M P n. Its economy is its strength: with Ga and Dha omitted, everything depends on how Ma and komal Ni are shaped.

How the Rāga Moves
Ma is the vādi and the centre of gravity; komal Ni leads to the upper Sa and returns. Meend between Re and Ma, and between Pa and komal Ni, gives the rāga its flowing line.

A monsoon text often paired with this rāga. Sing the meends fully — with only five notes, the glides carry the expression.
Practice Notes
Points of Practice
Meend is everything
Five notes with no glides is a scale, not a rāga.
Komal Ni only
Śuddha Ni turns it into Śuddha Sārang territory.
Rest on Ma
Let phrases resolve to Ma as often as to Sa.
