Śuddha Sārang

शुद्ध सारंग

Bright and glancing — the noon light of the Sārang family.

A Sārang that takes both Madhyams: tīvra Ma in ascent and śuddha Ma in descent, with śuddha Ni. Ga is omitted, which gives the rāga its clean, open midday character.

How the Rāga Moves

Re and Pa carry the rāga. The two Madhyams must be kept in their places — tīvra rising, śuddha falling — and the descent through Dha is brief and glancing rather than dwelt upon.

X = sam · 0 = khālī · 2, 3, 4 = tālī · one cell = one mātrā · – = sustain.

The mukhḍā rises to tīvra Ma before the sam. Practise it slowly against the drone so the two Madhyams stay distinct at speed.

Practice Notes

Points of Practice

Two Madhyams
M′ ascending, M descending — mixing them collapses the rāga.
No Gandhār
Ga is fully varjit; a stray Ga makes it Kalyāṇ-coloured.
Weight Re
Re is vādi and the natural landing note of most phrases.
