Kedār

केदार

Devotional and lyrical — named for Śiva, sung in the first watch of night.

Kedār takes both Madhyams and uses a strongly vakra ascent. Its identity rests on the phrase S M, M P — a leap from the tonic straight to Madhyam that no other Kalyāṇ rāga makes.

How the Rāga Moves

Ga is omitted in ascent and touched only lightly in descent. Śuddha Ma is the vādi and the note of rest; tīvra Ma appears in descending turns from Pa. The leap S M must be clean and unhurried.

The sthāyī opens on the S–M leap, which makes it an ideal composition for fixing the rāga's signature in the ear from the first lesson.

Practice Notes

Points of Practice

The S M leap
Clean, direct and unornamented — this phrase is the rāga.
Both Madhyams
Śuddha Ma rests; tīvra Ma decorates the descent from Pa.
